Sledge, of Durham, spent the week end with relatives in Weldon, Misses Virginia Inge and Vir ginia Bishop visited friends at Run ersonville last week. You can't always tell. The pret tiest silk stockings that you see on the street may have a hole in the toe. Mrs. E, C. Morrisette, of Rocky Mount, spent several days in town last week, the guest of Mrs. D. B. Zollicoffer. The name of Madison Armsiead was by mistake, left off' the honor roll last week. We gladly make the correction, though it was not our mistake. The Junius Daniel Chapter, U. Merrill, in the 8 1 si year of his age. He was an ex Confederate soldier and was well thought of by all who knew mm. Paralysis was the cause ot his death. . DEATH OP MRS. BRASWfclX. Died at her home in this place, on Tuesday morning last, Mrs. Sallie E. Braswell, in the 04ih year ot age. The funeral look place on Wednesday aliernoon and the interment was at Cedar wood cemetery. The responses to roll call were given in names of books and their authurs of the 19th cen tury. At a must interesting busi ness session it was voted to place Ihe library of the club containing many interesting and valuable h:)oks in the assembly room of the American Legion and two ladies appninied from the club in be pres ent on ceriain days to give them out id the public. These are now and will be free to all who desire to read and return the books with in established regulations. The program consisted of a vo cal solo, by Mrs. R. S Travis. Piano solo, Mrs. Vinson, an ad mirable paper, the classification of American novels of the 1 9th cen tury and their writers, by Mrs. S. B. Pierce, and a discussion of the women writers of the period out side of fiction, by Mrs. E. H. Smith. All these were listened to wiih great interest and much en joyed. The hostess, assisted by other ladies, served a delicious course of jellied fruits and accesso ries. Mrs. S. B. Pierce poured coffee in the dining room which was artistically decorated with Jonquills and other spring flowers in the club colors of green and gold. There were several visitors present who expressed pleasure at being at this delightful meeting. WELDON VICTOR OVER Rh'AL. On last Thurrsday afternoon at four o'clock on the local court, the Weldon High School boys turned an earlier defeat at the hands of Enfield High School basket hall team into an overwhelming victory to the tune of 36 to 18. If history records happenings correctly, this is the first time our high school has ever defeated En field in basket ball. The line up and summary follows : . On Wednesday night, March 15, 1922, the Freshman Class of Hal ifax High School, assisted by Miss Richardson, delighttully entertain ed the Senior Class. The auditori um was bcauulully decoraied in green and white, the senior class colors. During the evening the Seniors were surprised to see appear on thesce'ne an old gypsy who fore told the future of each one. Very interesting contests were given alter which dainty refresh ments were served. Those pres ent were: Mesdames N. L. Sted man, R. D. Applewhite, W. F. The object of this Auxiliary will be to co-opesate with the Legion. The constitution was read and Mrs. W. K. Gray was elected lor Active President and Mrs. F. N. Poole secretary. A banquet and dance was planned at tnis meeting to be given Tuesday night, for the Legion members and their wives and sweethearts. Mrs. Craig Cornwall and Mrs. Grady Lassiter entertained the Music Club on Wednesday after noon, March 15th, at the home of Mrs. J. A. Musgrove. The meeting was called to order by the president. Eighteen mem bers were present. Each member responding to roll call by giving an j interesting incident in the life ol Edward MacDowell. The program for the afternoon was as follows: I. Voice Selections: "Thy Beam ing Eyes," MacDowell, and "By the Waters of Minnetonka," an Indian love song, by Mrs. Raleigh Daniel. 2: Piano Selection: "To a Wild Rose," MacDowell, by Mrs. N. J. Shepherd. It was the pleasure of the club to have as a guest Mrs. Clarence Johnson, of Raleigh. Other guests were Mrs, E. H. Smith, Mrs. F. N. Poole and Mrs. D. W. Seifert. T. N. HARRISON DIES. Died at his home in Littleton, on Thursday night, of last week, Mr Thomas N. Harrison, 70 years old. Death came after he had been confined to his room for sev eral days from an affection of the heart. Mr. Harrison was born and raised in the Ringwood section. He served as Deputy Clerk of the Superior Court for Halifax county with the late John T. Gregory and was chairman of Board of County Commissioners during the fusion or Third party administration. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Daisy Faucett, and six chil dren. COUNTY BOARDS SELECTED. One hundred county boards of elections of three members each, were appointed to office by the State Board of Elections in session in Raleigh, last Saturday. Ap pointees hold office for two years, and will conduct the June 3rd primary and the general elections to be held next November. Two Democrats and one Republican are included on each county board. The following iwere appointed for Halifax county : Ben Fishel, Hollister; Wade H. Dickens, Weldon; W. S.Sanders, Republican, Roanoke Rapids. COLTRANE NAMED. E. G. Coltrane, Superintendent of the Roanoke Rapids schools, has been named lull time secretary of the North Carolina Teachers Assembly, at a salary of $4,01)0 per year, and Raleigh and Thanks giving named as the time for hold ing the next meeting of the organ ization. Mr. Coltrane will assume his new duties July 1, and will have offices with the State Department of Education. In addition to his salary he will be given clerical help and traveling expenses. Teacher, G. D. Hawks. LARGE STILL CAPTURED. One day last week Sheriff J. A. Flouse captured a large still, in the Bowers neighborhood, this county. This was a full copper still and doubtless minis the genuine auM. Two colored men who were at the still at the time, were arrested and placed in jail. A quantity ol beer was also uestroyed. The colored men claimed that the still was owned and operated by other par ties and that they were there 10 sell the liquor. S TAIN BACK - DAVIS. The following marriage notice will be read with interest, by our readers, which is copied from a paper published at Spray : "A wedding of interest here was solemnized yesterday when Mrs, Ella Stainback became the bride of James M. Davis. They will make their home in Spray." We wish to extend congraiula tions to the happy couple and wish for them a smoothe journey down life's pathway. Mrs. Bumpass at one time lived in Weldon and had many warm personal friends, who will read the following wiih sincere re gret : "Mrs. Lina E. Bumpass, wife of Dr. R. S. Bumpass, former pastor of Edenton Sireet Methodist church of Raleigh, but now of Franklin ton, died Monday afternoon in a Raleigh hospital." THE U. D. CLUB. The U. D. Club met at the home of Elizabeth Bounds on March 24, 1922. After several piano selec tions, a delicious ice course was served by Ellice Bounds, assisted by Louise Hayward, Marga ret Hudson and Virginia Owen. Those enjoying the evening were: Alma Wyche, Bernice Dix on, Nellie W. Vincent, Florence Freid, Hazel Grant, Hazel Clark, Julia H. Gregory. DEATH OF MR. PARKER. Died at his home in this place, on Sunday morning last, of cancer of the stomach, Mr. R. L. Parker, in the 52nd year of his age. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon, from his late residence, Rev. L. D. Hayman officiating. The inter ment was at Cedarwood cemetery. DON'T FOROET. All owners of vacant lots will please look after same by April 4th. April 4th and 5th are clean up days. Don't forget to put every thing in order. Get all the old tin cans, boxes and other unsightly rubbish together so that it can be carried off. Let's have a clean town. DEATH OF MR. PEPPER. Died at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital on Thursday last from the effects of an operation for ap pendicitis, Mr. David Pepper, in the 22nd year of his age. He was a son of Mr. William Pepper, who lives about 10 miles from town. Mr. Pepper leaves a wife and two small children to mourn their loss. APRON SALE. The Ladies Aid Society, Circle I, of the Baptist Church, will have an apron sale and luncheon in the Entry building, Friday, March 31, beginning at 1 1 o'clock, a. m. Chicken salad, sandwiches, ice cream, coHee, home-made candy and cakes will be offered for sale. BIRTHDAY PARTY. Master Arthur Cochrane was at home to quite a number of his little friends last Friday night, the occasion being his llth birthday. Delicious ice cream and other dain ty refreshments were served and all spent a most delightful evening. PUBLIC DEBATE. There was a public debaie last Friday at Seaboard between the schools of Norlina and Seaboard, Norlina winning by 2 to 1 . Prof. W. B. Edwards, of this place, was one of the judges. Westman On Friday morning, Feb. 1 7th. the Woman's Auxiliary of Grace Episcopal Church suffer ed a sreat loss in the' death of one of its loyal and devoted members, Mrs. Victoria McCarthy Hender son Westman, wife of our esteemed rector, Rev Chas. F.. Westman. Mrs. Westman was a woman of a lovable nature, bright and jolly, kind and sympathetic. Although with us only a short time, she won all with whom she came in contact by her genilemannerand Christian spirit. Whereas, it has pleased our Heavenly Father to remove front us our co-worker: Therefore, be it resolved by the members ol the Woman's Auxilia ry I. That in the death of Mrs, Westman, each member feels a deeD loss of a friend. 2. That the Auxiliary has lost a valuable member, whose sunny smile, cheery words and whose deeds of love and kindness we shall ereatly miss. 3.
